Relic Knights - Warwickshire Knighthood Week Two & Three

Relic Knights Warwickshire Knighthood started with a bang but sadly this short lived league must come to a close (boooo)! A great effort all round as eight players have gone head to head in week one bringing all factions out for a beating, but it is was all left to play for. If you missed out on the first week don't panic you can join in as we go! Some spot prizes we're awarded to people on the first night so it always pays to get down when you can.

Fight! Fight! Fight!

As the Knighthood comes to a close I want to say a great effort to everyone who got the games in, there were some trouncing's, there were some white knuckle moments, there was lots of fun. So much so I managed to lose track of every game story (not the scores), so below recounts some of the games that took place over this period.

In the future there is only... The wild west? Paul and Tom flipped things up a little by having a showdown in the dusty streets. Corsairs vs the Shattered Sword, as usual the Broadside died. Early. Followed by the Corsairs, so it was left to Harker to jump, kick, scream and shout from boardwalk to boardwalk for the game win.

Me and Tom got a game in going all Codifier Doctrine against a Shattered Sword list. This game was real tense and close coming down to 2 activations for Tom to win but the Doctrine sealed the deal moving those heist tokens off the board.

Paul and Tom managed two games of Cerci taking on the mighty Shattered Sword. Game one was a bit of a whitewash, Cerci just cruising around the board with the suicide queen to fulfill objectives for a 6-0 victory. Game two however was an all out fight fest, both teams ploughing into each other the Suicide Queen juking for her dear life! The Shattered Sword Knight couldn't take the punishment of Cerci's guns however and gradually was brought down and time called for a 3-0 cerci victory.

Wrap Up

Thanks again all for taking part, I will be running something again early next year, some more shots of the winners to come.

Relic Knights - Midlands Cadre 2015 Back to School Review

Hey there! Midlands Cadre happened and it was great fun, so much so I got home then fell asleep for many an hour. Thank you to everyone who made the event a real fun day for all. You can check out the indepth rules for the event over on the original page but as a short summary everyone needed to take a 35 point list and a 50 point list in an escalation style event. This posed quite a few limitations on all our players who are used to playing at the 50 point level. Most Knights were off the cards as you would end up with too few models to activate causing you to activate your Cypher too often. It was really refreshing to see all the units and Knights that don't usually make it to the table top coming out to play.

Ben Clapperton - Midlands Cadre 2015 Winner
And so before I set off into my review of each game I will get the most important part out the way. Who won? If you are not blind then you have seen the image above, Mr Ben Clapperton took the Gold with the final results looking as follows.

Some really close scores above, if you are interested in how the tie breakers went you can check it out in more detail on the challonge page.

The top list of the day was Ben Clapperton's Corsairs, I feel pretty happy about this for two reasons. The first is that the Corsairs have seen a lot of stick from people quoting they are unplayable and this just shows that they not only can hold their own, but when played well can win a Cadre. Secondly this is the list (with one change) I was going to take until Lewis Wundowa nabbed my Corsairs for the day (I forgive you Lewis).

The Day From My Perspective

The aim for the day was to have fun, leading up to the event I had acquired quite a few new Relic Knights miniatures that have come out in the new wave of material and packaging. I rushed to get these guys finished for the event as I wanted to play with the new shiny toys! So here are my two lists:

Speed Painted Anthony, Doctrine Questing Knight
So my first match of the day kicked off against Sam Pugh, a great guy who had travelled up with team London to get in on the action. I had a real fun game with Sam who felt like he knew the game inside out despite only playing for a short period of time. Unlucky positioning of the Primary objective meant I could get Wu and the Prefects into position to score heist very quickly being near a board edge. Wu being a pain and dropping Remain Where You Are caused a few headaches for Sam but he did manage to rack up some damage on the Prefects who were without their usual Darkfield to protect them. Time was called and I managed to squeeze in the last token drop for the five victory points. Really enjoyed this game and I made a few mistakes myself being new to using Anthony, his switching Cyphers and Wu.

Master Wu - Doctrine Unique
Second game came into sight and I had a rematch with Lewis Wundowa (who beat me in his first ever game) so the stakes were set high. Who would come out with their head held aloft? Lewis went straight for the jugular, pumping round after round of attacks into Wu and Anthony. Both are tough cookies when Anthony has Castor out and chose Angel as the Cadre ability (all defence skills are +1) but he still managed to half the health of Wu and Anthony. I drew Heist again and being the villain, managed to set up my primary objective central to force him near a board edge. Anthony and especially Wu did their thing, being damage sponges and grabbing heist tokens to deposit them off the board.

Wu's diving charge ability is brilliant for objective grabbing, it allows him to move a considerable distance by diving onto target models and gaining a feint after plus his follow up move. This coupled with the damage meant I was thinning Lewis's corsairs ranks until he finally finished them off. Then the unthinkable happened, Captain Harker and Isabeau combined to put the hurt on Anthony taking him down. The score was 3-1 to Lewis and with time running out this could be a Corsairs win! But alas seeing Anthony fall Master Wu didn't skip a beat, diving onto the objective, grabbing the last heist token and making it off the board meant I scored the 5 VP plus the extra for the Corsairs unit kill for a Doctrine victory. Huzzah! A great game against Lewis which was a lot closer than the scores suggest and only his third ever game! One to look out for in future Cadres.

Castor and Pollux, Anthony's Cyphers
Next up was Cy Dudley fielding the Shattered Sword. Cy has played for quite a while so I knew I was going to be in for a close match. Some careful positioning meant that my objectives were as far as possible from his primary as he flipped Conservation. I had Tear it Down and Carnage but due to the awesome peculiar board we were playing on there was an Esper Crystal positioned on the highest part of the board (which overlooked everything, see below). I took the initiative and landed my units right next to this great piece of terrain, all but Master Wu who was going to be my go to guy for playing tricks against the Shattered Sword. Having both the prefects with Coordinated Attack and Anthony in this position meant I could not only attack his objectives every turn but also I would generate free Held Esper in doing so (being next to the crystal). It was just a race against time.

Cy started by compelling my objectives closer to his, I then hit his secondary for 11 points of damage and followed up with another 6. Master Wu dived in for the final killing blow on activation number 3. Not too bad, just one more to go. I then focused a little on slowing down the enemy, dropping a Remain Where You Are which meant Cy had to move around the outside of the AoE. The next few turns passed and again I managed to wipe out the other secondary in pretty quick fashion. Five victory points to me. Just to try and stop Cy now.

Unfortunately for Cy, he had positioned his Purifiers and Isabeau to provide armour buffs to his primary objective, in turn denying himself access to drop the tokens he had acquired. This meant my Fiametta had an opening to destroy a purifier then place herself in the gap to deny access and provide her burning ability to all models that ended a move within her range.

Time was called but given a few more turns I would have been hard pressed to stop him indefinitely whilst trying to get the final victory point from killing his Purifiers. Cy admitted after he had screwed himself over with the positioning a little, this could have went an entirely different direction indeed. Having the psychic team though with full board access, inside a Darkfield with free Held Esper was always going to be a nightmare for him.

So the final match of the day came round and I was fated to spa against Ben Clapperton, otherwise known as "the guy who wins all the Cadre events". This was a really good game to be a part of and my first against Ben. I drew Tear it Down again (which I am not a fan of) and Ben drew Corruption and Anarchy. I knew he would be going for the faction objective "Booty" as well as Anarchy and with Wildspace Gabe that linked activation with the Corsairs meant he could deny my objectives and further his own whilst cycling Isabeau. I decided to try to take out the Corsairs, being the unit with no guard it would also mean fast cycling his queue wouldn't be an option if I achieved it. Sadly this is where Ben's experience came into play, great positioning, Deep Crow Nesting my Prefects and the fast activation meant he managed to complete his faction objective and secondary objective before I managed to kill the Corsairs who were snug in a Darkfield (even after I managed to shift it out of the way with Stand Back).

With one victory point left I set about denying Ben killing my remaining Prefects (being the only target without a Guard). They were sitting within a Darkfield but the amount of AoE's and damage Ben could output meant that it was a losing battle. I got some decent damage off onto his objectives but without the focused effort I couldn't last long and Ben took 6 victory points for the win.

In hindsight if I had purely focused on my Tear it Down objective it would have been a very close race to the finish. With Gabe generating Held Esper and sitting next to his secondary objective though it would have been very tough to push enough damage through without him healing it multiple times (again because of the fast activation linked corsairs unit). A great game all in all that was quite tense at times and doubly great as it was almost the list I took :D (see earlier comments).

I spoke to a lot of new faces this Cadre event and had a great time with everyone of my opponents. The general consensus seemed like this was a hit so I will be definitely looking to plan more Relic Knights events in the future, I very much enjoyed running the event for everyone and seeing everyone have a great time so thank you all who attended to make it a great day.

It is worth confirming that each player will play a maximum of 5 games towards their league results with the winner being crowned the champion! Huzzah!

The Story So Far

On our opening night we had a few head to heads between Paul Stacey and Andrew Warner fielding Cerci and Black Diamond. The game was closely contested but Malya's pace and threat proved too much in the end for the diamond corp scoring 6-3 to Cerci.

The corsairs and Broadside get ready to loot some booty, arrrggghhhhhhh.
Our second game of the evening was between Graeme Nicholls and Paul Cocks who were fielding the Shattered Sword and Corsairs respectively. Talk about a turn one! Graeme successfully nuked the broadside with his first activation using coordinated attack with the Swordsworn putting Paul on the back foot from the get go. Paul managed to stick around for quite a while dodging and weaving with Darkspace Isabeau for the corsairs (what a pesky minx). Sadly it wasn't enough for paul and Graeme took the win scoring an outright 6-0.

Industrial board saw the Cerci and Black Diamond go head to head.
Third game up was Craig (me) vs Charlotte fielding our own Doctrine and Cerci. I Think I tried to be too clever here testing a few units I never really use and it fell to pieces for me not being able to get through the Suicide Queen's guards. The game was however a stalemate as neither of us could complete our primary as the time ticked away so we called it at 3 VP each for the first draw of the league.

Difficult terrain is... Difficult
Next up was Paul Cocks again against a new player coming fresh to the game Tom. For a first time effort Tom did a great job scoring 4 victory points with the Doctrine but Paul's prior games experience took him through with a 6-4 victory using the Corsairs.

When only one scurvy filled pirate will do, Captain Harker is on the job!
Fifth game of the league went back to Paul and Andy for a rematch, Andy wanted retribution for his last defeat fielding his Black Diamond again this time with a Diamondback addition, whilst Andy swapped factions and brought out the Noh. This was a much different game and more a war of attrition, neither able to get the upper hand. In the end the game was called by time and Paul had wrung out a well earned 4-1 for the Noh victory. On fire this shot Paul to the top of the leader board with everyone eye-balling him as the guy to beat!

Careful positioning to stop Candy getting in for the token drop.
I then got chance to play against Graeme and his Swordsworn, but wait! He did the switcheroo and fielded Candy instead with Navarre, Isabeau and Fiametta, Cheeky! I went out with an entirely Codifer list of Brahe, Zineda, Togan & Cecilia and Fiametta. Let the games begin! This was such a close game I cannot give Graeme any more credit as we was one activation from victory for either side at the end. At one point I managed to get three Esper Storms out on the field causing a nuisance. Both Fiametta's on 1 and 2 wounds each were locked in a battle to be the first to destroy the other and Graeme managed to be first past the post with that, blowing her away with Candy. Seeing bloody red Brahe Nuked the remaining Fiametta with TPK. One victory point each... In the dying moments of the game Graeme was set to return his final two tokens to his primary objective with Candy and Navarre in range, but wait! With some clever positioning I blocked access to his objective with Zineda and Togan & Cecilia and managed to fire off a Remain Where You Are on Candy from Brahe (having law with Doctrine is nice!). This was well timed as Navarre was up next and he didn't have the cards to remove the AoE. Thus Candy activated and couldn't get into position to push all my models out of the way leaving me the activation I needed to get the last sabotage token in play. A really close game and some epic moments including me being close to drawing through my deck whilst Graeme had secure tokens on his objectives. But in the end the Doctrine prevailed, huzzah! 6-1 to Craig.

Doctrine take on the Radiant!
Final game for week one fell on another new recruit, Lewis. Fielding the Corsairs vs Cerci who took a very flimsy but highly mobile list. The game progressed with Cerci sabotaging the primary thrice and another secondary only to be denied the final due to careful positioning. With an awesome redirect Isabeau managed to deflect 7 points of damage onto the Cerci primary objective only to destroy it two activations later for their primary objective completion! With a final show of pirate swagger the corsairs moved into melee and took on the Hells Belles who didn't have the cards to guard and went down in a fiery fireball of death (but damn it looked cool). An awesome 6 points to Lewis for his first game ever, well done sir!

With no room to manoeuvre the Belles bit the dust!

And that wraps up week 1 of Warwickshire Knighthood, its been a blast so far and there are games lined up for the next week so lets keep them going and see who is crowned champion! Thanks to everyone who attended and made for a great few evenings.

Painting Table August 2015

August for me has been a month of Malifaux, Imperial Assault and Relic Knights. I first had a tournament at the start of the month for Relic Knights so managed to get Cordelia Clean, Delphyne and Ekhis polished off, funny that these were the first miniatures I had too and have taken the longest. I also managed to get my Terrakami crates and cargo containers finished which look great on the sci-fi terrain board.

Then came the start of the Imperial Assault campaign with a group of five so I got my head down and finished off the rest of the box that had been waiting for me along with the custom tray inserts to organise it all, great stuff. This didn't stop me from then purchasing Twin Shadows along with the additional packs (curse you fantasy flight for making awesome games!).

I also have another tournament around the corner for Malifaux so decided to finish off my Dreamer crew including wicked dolls, teddy, the Dreamer starter and some proxy insidious madness in the form of pink horrors. Also decided to have a dabble at some custom terrain in the form of a sign post, sadly there is only a population of two in McNicholfaux (me and the wife) but we welcome others to come join our little home town.

Finally I posted up some pics that strictly speaking aren't from this month (many moons ago) but never made it on to the site so thought I would give them their time in the spotlight, Mice and Mystics has been a blast and I recently got to play it with a really young audience and we really enjoyed it, more so when its painted.

Relic Knights - What Is This Game And Why Should I Care? A Review

It has been in the works as you might have been able to tell. I post a lot about Relic Knights and in a short period of time I have got over 8 others in my area playing actively, been to two tournaments, organised a league and set up another tournament which attracts people from all over the UK. Not to mention got hold of all released models for the Doctrine, Cerci and Corsairs as well as painting through the entire Doctrine faction and a wealth of Sci-fi terrain. Why have I done this?

It's simple, this game is just freakin awesome.
Growing up I played a lot of Warhammer 40k and Lord of the Rings miniatures games. I really enjoyed that time of my life, things were simple, you stuck a box together, put them on the table, ran them towards someone and rolled some dice to smack them in the chops. Then you came away, spent more money for more guys to do the same thing but on a bigger scale next week. Then I simply found other hobbies having saturated my war gaming. Gamecube, learning guitar/keyboard and vocals for a band, weight training, long distance running and a fabulous partner-now-come-wife. Time passed.

Me and The Wife Cruising Through Cuba
In the last few years I have got back into card/board gaming with the likes of Android Netrunner, Lord of the Rings LCG, Betrayal at House on the Hill and so on. So this year (2015) I decided to head on down to my local games club Warwickshire Gamers, they play a lot of wargames and quickly got a few intro's in with some of the guys. I snapped up a Malifaux box, started to piece together a Mordheim band and refreshed my hobby supplies of paint, brushes, modelling tools and life was good. Then I got word on a fateful Saturday that the UK Games Expo was happening at the NEC just down the road from me. The wife was at work so I decided I would go check it out. Then disaster struck.

Betty and Lug
Whilst perusing all the great stands and talking to a fair few developers, producers and artists I came across the Ninja Division stand and got speaking to Rory O'Connor who quickly suckered me in to a demo game of Relic Knights, lo and behold I was instantly sold.

I tried to do the whole "I'm cool, I'll walk away from this" tactic but 20 minutes later I was back at the stand speaking to Paul Scott.
Under the guise of "I am totally buying this for the wife" I stood there for what seemed like (and probably was) an hour picking my faction of choice, Cerci was an instant yes, breasts and bikes was an instant sell but what else? I wanted a unique heavy cadre so that really narrowed it down to Doctrine or Corsairs. My Fullmetal Alchemist heart fluttered at the thought of the Doctrine so I went with my gut and opted for the Doctrine battle box too along with Cordelia Clean and Codifier Brahe as he is a show special.

Squall and Kenobo
Job done? Well no I also spent a fortune on other stuff that day but I did get some cool neoprene mats, the Battlesystems kickstarter terrain pack and a free hard back rule book for Relic Knights, awesome! I got home that day and spent the rest of the day assembling my battle boxes. The miniature quality is great, not perfect, but for the price of a battle box which includes softback rules, all tokens, an esper deck, unit cards and models it is the most awesomely priced entry pack to any miniatures game ever!

One of our first games Cerci vs Doctrine
Once together and primed I shifted focus and got to work on the Battlesystems Kickstarter and 6 hours later had it all up, time to find a game... Which victim would I choose? Well seeing as the wife was there I suckered her into a game quoting "it's anime!" "theres fullmetal inspired minis" "theres cute little cyphers" "people do crazy magic powers." She caved and we had a game that evening, it was a blast! We messed up a lot of the rules on that first game but it didn't matter, she won by throwing my Novitiates off the tallest point in the map and was happy for it. This to me is a crucial point as to why this game is great, it has a unique appeal to people who really enjoy anime and particularly women which is not impossible but is still fairly uncommon in a wargame.

Over the coming weeks I got my starter boxes painted, got more games in with the wife and managed to get a game or two at my local club by bringing all my supplies. Then it was announced that Northern Cadre was taking place, the wife was working so I was like "why the hell not?" I travelled up with Ninja Paul Scott and had an absolutely amazing time managing to get three games in on the day. By this point I felt I had enough experience to start pushing the game to others in my area so that's what I started doing, going to new clubs, meeting new people, having some real great times. The most common questions I got were "how does it work?" and "what is it like?"

My completed Doctrine faction

How Does it Work?

Relic Knights starts with your cadre selection, a group of units that come together to form a band or "cadre" this is who you will be playing with during the game. You have a queue of units which determines the order in which they activate, there are no traditional turns or rounds, your queue just continues to cycle and you are in control of your queue so it is down to you in terms of timing your plays. You have a hand of cards which form your available Esper which can be used to pay for abilities on your units, don't have the cards? Then you can't do the ability so timing and resource management are key. You win by scoring more victory points than your opponent, the most effective way of doing this is by completing the randomly drawn scenarios that you get at the start of a game, you can gain VP's by killing opponents units but this is very costly from a resource perspective and gives quite a small output VP wise, all this time your opponent will be furthering their objectives so it is recommended to not take this approach.

Ekhis keeps the Royal Wrecker at bay

What is it Like?

The closest thing I can relate Relic Knights to is Malifaux, you have a hand of cards and it is diceless, you draw scenarios at the start which are much like schemes, you win by getting VP's and the best tactics in Malifaux are not around wiping your opponent off the map. But it is all that and so much more, the setting just works. Being Sci-Fi and anime based models can leap 10 times their height in the air, you can hadouken! your opponent into a wall and suck objectives through a vaccuum. How does it get away with all this? "It's anime" is my favourite line. If you have ever seen any action based anime series you will see what I mean, these things are just achievable in this world and when you think of them taking place in this setting you don't get bogged down with "how did he just jump across that 20 foot gap?"

Black Diamond dropping bombs

Why Should I Care?

And to the main point of the article why does this all matter? Well it does if any of the above ticks your boxes. It is a fun fast game with in-depth tactical strategy and for a version 1.0 it is probably one of the most solid rule sets I have played. Mentioning versions there is an upcoming 2.0 which adds to the universe, clears up some of the wording on rules and adjusts the scenarios to be a little more balanced. The fact that Ninja Division and Soda Pop are putting money into this product is a great sign for the longevity of the product, it has been around now for about 1.5 to 2 years and like any new game is very slow to pick up in the market. Based on my experience of the game though it has what it takes to muscle its way into this cut throat market with an already dedicated player base in the UK which is growing.

I would recommend this game to anyone who is interested in wargames, anime and wants something different.
What are you waiting for? Grab one of the super awesomely priced battle boxes and get going!

Relic Knights - North East Cadre Cerci 500!

I'm back from Cerci 500! A fun filled, action packed race to the finish line. The day was an absolute blast and firstly I want to say a big thank you to Ben Clapperton who organised the event, he did a smashing job. The day started at 6.45am wrapped up in my sleeping bag at a friends house, five minutes later I find out I forgot my toothbrush! What a start, guess it was "use the finger" time. That minor catastrophe over, I got to Paul Scott's at 7.20am where I messaged him. Some waiting occurred then I waited some more. I then did the unthinkable and knocked on his door before 7.30am to hear him call out the window in a croaky voice "in a minute." Someone sleep in did they Paul? We will put it down to jet lag from his recent trip abroad...

Some of my Doctrine including Delphyne, Togan and Cecilia, Ekhis, Cordelia Clean, The Prefects and a variety of boosts
Anyway we hit the road only to find out Paul had left his mobile, minor catastrophe number two, this didn't bode well for the Midlands boys. We discussed various Ninja/Relic Knights/Mini's games on the way up, the time passed and we picked Snowy up near Harrogate. Another hour along the motorway and we made it for 10.15am, perfect timing. We bust our way through the doors like a suited reservoir dogs slo-mo cut scene. Waugh Games was our host today and the place was a great space to get some Relic Knights gaming action in. Four tables were set out and I provided the terrain and mat for the fifth, game on!

One of the board for Cerci 500
Ben drew the first round and guess what... I had to play Paul. Now our rivalry extended back to Northern Cadre where we didn't get to spar but I ended the day 2-1 whilst he managed a similar but not so awesome score of 1-2 (sorry Paul, I just keep reminding you). We got set up on the red planet board in front of us and Ben drew scenarios for everyone. He drew Secure Perimeter and Defence of Life, a really nice touch was that Ben had got some custom Life tokens made for us with special thanks to Sarissa Precision, really cool (see below)!

The special tokens made for Cerci 500!
Going up against Paul's Black Diamond I was pretty sure he was going to try and shoot me in the face. I had two lists ready but I thought if I could achieve the primary faster than he could shoot me, I was in for a win here so I took my second list shown below.

The idea here was to fast activate Cordelia and use her flight and vacuum ability to close the distance needed to travel between objectives. Held Esper shouldn't be an issue with Cordelia generating her own and Ekhis can transfer or steal as needed. The Prefects would come in for objective grabbing whilst remaining in the Darkfield if necessary and Togan and Cecilia have access to chaos initiate which is useful as well as being quite resilient.

Paul Scott's Black Diamond
So our game got under way, Paul won the flip and chose to activate first. Being pretty much within the Darkfield the whole game meant that my Prefects and Togan didn't present themselves as targets for Paul, he did however charge headlong into combat with Delphyne on turn one with the Diamondback which gave me a moments fright, she armoured up as well as using the +1 armour from the Dampening Field and she was reduced to 2/3 health. Delphyne and Ekhis then crept their way up the board with Paul focusing some fire on them only for Delphyne to block the attacks using Ekhis. Due to the objective placement I pretty much had centre of the board and managed to get Paul to drop all his objectives in a line at the back edge. In came Cordelia Clean with a Vaccuum to suck up two objectives bringing them all within 8-10 inches of each other. I got secure tokens on all of Pauls objectives but not before he managed to waste another two Prefects in combat and securing my primary objective for himself.

With 5 minutes to go Paul hit Delphyne with all he was worth, Magnus carving a huge amount of damage out, being next to the Dampening Field and using her Essence Initiate armour abilities to boost it to a total of five armour she managed to survive with two health remaining, phew! She then snook in and secured my primary for the five victory points and time was called. A close game which could have gone either way with a little more focused fire on Delphyne so well done Paul. But if you had to choose a victor of this monumental match up you would obviously choose me (Craig that is) as I scored more than you Paul, that is because five is more than nothing. It was interesting that Defence of Life did not even play into our match up this time around.

Another board using the official Relic Knights Mat
Next up was Simon Glass who (congratulations) won his first ever Relic Knights game and at a cadre event for that. Taking the Black Diamond he had a full complement of One Shot, Suspect 7, Diamond Corps, Blitz Tank and another unit of Corp. I took the same list again after Ben drew Espionage and Carnage scenarios. I knew I wasn't going to be completing Carnage as my faction isn't geared towards damage output but Espionage was definitely possible. I would have to pay attention to his One Shot though as it has the ability to pretty much "One Shot" Delphyne. We both deployed and I managed again to get my opponent to place all objectives on the same side of the board and with a sneaky rear deployment of Togan and Cecilia caused real problems for Simon who had to think twice about shooting them due to being able to redirect to the nearest unit.

The game rolled on with Cordelia sabotaging and infusing the first secondary objective. Delphyne got up close and personal with the primary objective planting three sabotage tokens and keeping either Ekhis attached to another unit or next to her. Simons Blitz Tank managed to shoot its own unit with a cheeky redirect from Delphyne but Fritz had me in a tight spot when he dropped his AoE which meant units in the area cannot Guard, Yikes! Delphyne was a sitting duck! Luckily I had Ekhis a height three unit and the primary objective (another height 3 unit) and a cargo container (height 3) nearby so was able to deny pretty much most lines of fire.

At this point Simon sent some bullets flying into Togan and Cecilia in a great attempt to make me redirect them to the nearest target at the time which was Delphyne, I took the pasting on Togan and Cecilia and then continued to keep Delphyne out of range which mean the next viable target was the primary objective, a good play there by Simon. Delphyne got the final sabotage token on Simon's secondary objective then transferred some Held Esper to the Prefects who had been sitting pretty under the Darkfield Generator.

Not being able to see them all game meant Simon was in a position where he couldn't stop them so they went on to grab my faction objective for a 6-0 victory. Positioning in this game was key as I caused a real nightmare for Simon with Togan and Cecilia. A good game though and hopefully gives simon some things to think about from other factions and what they will bring to the table.

Cy Dudleys Shattered Sword
Lunch time hit us and I was feeling good having taken two wins and 11-0 in victory points. Huzzah! Waugh games was a real nice venue so I had a poke around some of the stuff for sale, got talking to a few of the guys who had travelled and handed out my supply of double sized protectors for people. And then back to the madness!

I believe I was joint first by this point so got matched up with Andrew Watson who was playing the only Radiant list of the day. I have never played against this Candy list which is regarded as one of the top three at 50 points but I did have a very good idea of how the synergies work. He took Candy, Cordelia Clean and Navarre from Shattered Sword. My one gripe with this list (I will get this out of the way now) is that you can pick any faction scenario regardless of whether you include a unit from that faction. Andrew chose Lap Time so the race was on to see if he could complete his primary scenario before I could stop him. For this game I swapped up my list as I knew fast activation alone wasn't going to save me not having overcharged damage prevention abilities so I went with my first list:

The idea here is simple, stay hidden in the Darkfields, grab the objectives and stay alive with Kisa doing most of legwork with her Thrusters movement as well as having the ability to move units out of position with Essence action Stand Back on all my units. I believe I got a decent deployment in as it caused some issues for Andy when placing his final unit Candy. My Prefects were set up in conga line to the nearest objective ready to grab the super groovy Conservation tokens that Ben had got produced. The first few turns revolved around getting closer to objectives, Andy's entire list has flight so terrain is basically negated. The prefects did manage to hit Cordelia after picking up a token causing her to drop it which slowed him down a little and Kisa managed a similar trick by using the Stand Back Essence ability to push Navarre and Candy into the nearby terrain again causing her to drop the token.

These extra activations meant I went ahead on token drops even though Andy had activated first, hurrah! But alas, the true speed and ability to ignore terrain ended up causing too many issues for me. Andy tried to block Togan and Cecilia who had grabbed a token off his secondary but he cheekily placed an AoE denying me my first move. Togan and Cecilia again got Stand Back off to move all his units out the way and produce a path to victory having an infuse token on both his Secondary objectives and them holding the last Conservation token as well as a Held Esper! Just one more activation and I could have dropped that token and infused on the same turn for the win. But Cordelia being a woman with jetboots swiftly boosted in to his Primary Objective for the Conservaton five victory points and his Lap Time victory. Sour grapes here. But I must give it to Andy, it was a really awesome game that I hugely enjoyed and fared better against than I thought, well done and after all I lost out to number one which isn't so bad now you say it out loud.

A selection of Noh Warriors
So came the final match up of the day for me against Craig Johnson, what?!? Another Craig! How bloody dare he! My game before felt like it had taken me through the mill but it was about to get worse in what was the most closely contested game I think I have ever had. Ben drew Tear it Down and Anarchy for both of us. I figured that Tear it Down wasn't going to be an option for me so my focus was on sabotaging five objectives and of course stopping the Suspect 7. Craig Johnson took a Black Diamond list that is pretty standard including Magnus, Sophia, Black Dragons, Suspect 7 a Darkfield Generator and a Dampening Field. A strong list letting the Suspect 7 fast activate to complete their faction objective in three activations. For the remainder of this post I will refer to Craig Johnson as Mr. J to avoid confusion.

Mr. J got the first activation which saw him shimmy the Suspect 7 down the board as quickly as possible, standard stuff. Next up was Kisa, I managed to pay for Esper Storm and dropped it right on the Suspect 7 standing at his primary objective knowing that this would force him to drop the token on his activation wasting time and if he stayed around would get hurt. Knowing he could stick around and sacrifice his Suspect 7 he had just enough time before her base one armour plus the Dampening Field wasn't enough to stop her dying. So on my second activation with Togan and Cecilia I dropped Miscommunication, an AoE which stops units in the area receiving any buffs. Not being able to use the Dampening Field meant he couldn't stay long enough to grab the second cargo token, huzzah! More turns flowed and again Mr. J was about to make another dash for the Cargo token with his second Suspect 7 model, he moved up to just outside the range of the AoE at full health which meant she could move in, take the damage and survive. Noooo! I can't let that happen!

So Togan and Cecilia got back into the action and used Stand Back to push her off the height three cargo container causing two damage to her, she activated next turn and bit the dust. Another close call! In all this time we had also been manoeuvring to sabotage our own and each others objectives. Things were getting tense and with 15 minutes remaining, I had two objectives left to sabotage whilst Mr. J had one. I dropped the infuse token off on my primary and one of his secondary objective so I was set to achieve five victory points if I could somehow deny him his sabotage or cargo. At this point his Suspect 7 set about killing my Prefect who was in the Darkfield and swiftly made short work of her. Shortly after, his Black Dragons scored his secondary scenario with a final Sabotage, Kisa moved into position to sabotage the last objective but sadly it was too late.

The fast activation of Sophia and the Black Dragons meant they quickly went marching across the board picking up that final Cargo token and deposited it off the edge, with my final Prefect stranded he bit the dust out in the open just after Kisa scored my secondary objective. A win for Mr. J but it was so tightly contested that it made for a brilliant finale to the day. I can see now that my positioning was a little to blame but that is the best thing about these tightly knit games, looking back and seeing the one mistake you made that cost you. The back and forward between the Suspect 7 and Doctrines "control" abilities were a great match up and at the end I believe we had an audience of 5 or 6 people. Great game Mr. J. and I look forward to more like it in the future.

So in the end I came away with fourth place and I commend Paul Scott for pitting me to the post and taking third. Well Played sir (I knew all this take the piss out of Paul was gonna bite me in the ass) but I can still hold the moral high ground having beat him in my first game :P

A good day for Team Midlands taking both 4th and 3rd place and a great day had by all. It was a pleasure to meet everyone who made it to the event and I look forward to seeing (and playing) against you all at other Cadre events across the country. The scene really is picking up and its fun and exciting to be a part of it.
