Age of Sigmar - Into Shyish Fan Made Battle Plan

As part of our Waystone of Rhya campaign for Age of Sigmar I put together a a Battle Plan for the opening scenario. I thought I would post it up here as a fan made Battle Plan for others to use if they dare! Click on the image below for the PDF.

Hunting for an ancient artefact, several war parties have entered the realm of Shyish looking for information. Unprepared souls must test their courage to breaking point lest fear take them to the grave and the endless armies of the dead.

The battle plan involves "Death Posts" magical markers built in Shyish to channel the horrors of Death. Brave warriors can stare into the face of Death itself looking for information, but those without a strong resolve will fall. It kicks our campaign off with a bang as we are all searching for information regarding the waystone. Hope you enjoy it to.

Age of Sigmar - Waystone of Rhya Part 1

We are kicking off our Age of Sigmar narrative campaign this week with an adapted Path to Glory campaign. See the Waystone of Rhya for the rules and backstory. Adding just this little bit of narrative to begin with has sparked some great stories from the guys and gals taking part. Here are two of the forces stories currently battling for the stone. Click on each image for the PDF story.

Sylvaneth - Last of the Elder Grove

Stormcast - Edric Blightseeker
We have a few more Death armies and some Seraphon who will also be joining the hunt! More to come soon.

Age of Sigmar - The Waystone of Rhya

So after the disappointment that was the Path to Glory campaign for our local gaming group I set about building something lightweight, that was a bit more balanced and supported all the old Warhammer Fantasy Battle factions. I bring to you the Waystone of Rhya.

IN THE REALM OF SHYISH THERE ARE WHISPERS OF AN ARTEFACT OF ULTIMATE POWER. FORGED IN THE REMNANTS OF WHAT CAME TO BE THE REALM OF CHAMON, BY THE GREAT FOREBEARS OF THE FYRESLAYERS OF A BYGONE AGE, IT PASSED INTO THE REALM OF DEATH DURING THE BREAKING. IT HAS LAY DORMANT FOR CENTURIES BUT IT HAS BEGUN TO BE PERVERTED BY THE POWERS OF DEATH THAT TOUCH EVERYTHING WITH ITS COLD EMBRACE IN THE REALM. CRAZED MEN SPEAK OF THE DEAD RISING IN RELENTLESS SEARCH OF THE ARTEFACT, FOR HE WHO COMMANDS ITS POWER CAN TRAVERSE BETWEEN REALMS WITHOUT THE USE OF A GATE, TRAVELLING ALONG THE HIDDEN PATHS BETWEEN REALMS. WILL YOU JOIN THE ARMIES OF THE DEAD IN SEARCH OF IT? WOULD YOU DESTROY IT? WOULD YOU USE IT? WOULD YOU SELL IT FOR IMMORTALITY? IT MATTERS NOT, IT ONLY MATTERS THAT NO-ONE (OR THING) FINDS IT BEFORE YOU DO.
So we have a compelling reason to start a warband and find the Waystone. Campaign wise book keeping is lightweight so should be suitable for those who don't want a lot of hassle or those who want to expand on it.

The main difference between this and the Path to Glory is that it supports all factions, want to use those Bretonnians? Go ahead! It also should balance more naturally. The Death faction in Path to Glory is a joke if you look at the limitations applied to it, having the random warscroll post game though still means that you are limited in what you can hire and allows you to forge some cool narrative for your warband. Hope you enjoy it anyway, feedback and comments are always welcome to improve it. See below for link to file.

Dropzone Commander - Conflict at Taros Operation 1

Continuing from the Scourge strike on 18th June 2264, on the best kept secret and fringe planet Taros it was clear the Scourge were planning something... President Wut Whent Wong had pumped money into the development of the orbital defence lasers and a satellite grid program to detect incoming spacecraft to provide early warning to it's inhabitants. Little did he know his advisor Hoo Flung Dhung had been siphoning off money into his new-swiss bank account.

And so on the 12th August 2265 the United Colonies of Mankind were caught with their pants down.

Debriefing of the initial Scourge assault on Taros.

Slipping through a hole in the defence grid The Scourge commanders were able to mobilise a strike force on the orbital laser batteries before they could be brought to rain hellfire on the carriers. At 05:29 on the 12th of August Harkounen Fleet engaged the Scourge Fleet suffering heavy casualties and having to retreat into the darkness of space. UCM land forces were mobilised to repel the incoming dropships heading for the gun batteries at Guan-Yo.

Operation briefing for Scourge Assault on the laser batteries
The opening minutes of the fight saw General P. Stacey's forces making their way into the combat zone. Mortar teams firing on targets from afar whilst Sabres and Katana's rolled onto the board followed by a wing of Falcons. However LIME battalion was being held up due to a recently applied spray coat in the garage on the Gladius not being fully dry. With severely limited forces humanity needed to hang on.

Taking to the buildings, flak teams and more legionnaires awaited the incoming wave of Scourge. All was quiet... Suddenly two huge orbs of plasma hurtled through the air landing directly on the orbital laser. Foundations shaking the building held up but it was in bad shape.

"I have come to realise two things. One, the Scourge had combined the plasma overloading capabilities of the Overseer with the Annihilator's. Two, we're screwed!" - General P. Stacey on the scourge assault at the Guan-Yo gun batteries.

He quickly organised a sally out to hit the ordnance delivering behemoths hard but was it too late? The Ferrum's drones went down in a hail of Scourge AA. Followed by the wing of Falcons who managed to dent the Annihilators.

Scourge moved in on the flanks supported by the crab of doom Oppressor and a wave of minders. UCM anti-air lit up the skies taking down dropships and light aircraft galore. Hunters moved in quickly to take shots on the facility which was quickly reaching its structural limit.

Finally the UCM reinforcements arrived but all hope was lost. The General issued the order to maximise Scourge casualties and minimise their losses. The Gladius and Sabres pushed into position and hit the Annihilators hard, taking one down. UCM began to retreat taking out stray vehicles.

The house came down on the mortar team burying them in rubble and finally the orbital laser caved in on itself into a pile of melted metal.

In the debriefing that followed funds were traced to advisor Hoo Flung Dhung who was subsequently offered to the Scourge as a host. Losing the orbital guns was a big blow to the UCM but a surprising number of initial casualties were sustained by the Scourge, however they have made a safezone now and can land with impunity, how will the next few hours pan out for Taros? We will see next time!

Dropzone Commander - Conflict at Taros Prologue

Having recently got the Dropzone Commander bug (something about an epic 10mm struggle in urban environments between squid like alien monsters and humanities last remnants, oh and destroying tower blocks like independence day...) our gaming group has started our narrative campaign, The Conflict at Taros. Totally made up fluff for our enjoyment.

Mission briefing for the Taros Prologue. We have incoming commander!

The scene was set one hazy afternoon on June 18th 2264 over the picturesque cityscape of New Brighton. Suddenly the sky darkened as drop-ships broke the atmosphere. Sightings were confirmed and the UCM stationed out of city mobilised under command of General P. Stacey. Soon after Scourge vessels were confirmed to have landed in other key cities including Zau Tun and Nostros. How did they spring this assault without any early warning?

Either way the General had his orders to repel the invaders and secure intelligence on them so that it may help determine how they managed to go undetected.

Meanwhile the Scourge Hive mind led by an oppressive Squid currently using Andy McGarry's body as a host had other intelligence that they wanted to gain control of...

The battle erupted with both sides making dashes for the key buildings early, The Scourge commander however got the drop on the UCM and managed to embed their forces further forward with their speedy grav-vehicles.

The sprawling city of New Brighton under attack from the Scourge

Wolverines scouted down the park off main street, soon after a call came in from Scouting Lieutenant A. Schwarz. "Light em Up!" quickly followed by precise orbital strikes from the Kodiak Command centre. The UCM brought the firepower and the Gladius quickly followed by taking down more lightly armoured scourge units.

In the maelstrom of heavy weapons fire both a special forces Raven and a Scourge Intruder got clipped whilst flying low and took the brave soldiers with them to the grave.

"We will hawden ouwa wesolve. We will wight the wongs of this Scouwge atwocity. We will webuild..." - President Wut Whent Wong of Taros on the Scourge attack

The UCM were winning the ground battle but The Scourge quickly shot ahead on gaining intel. Storming buildings with Devastators and vast numbers of units they overran the UCM defences. General P. Stacey called in a coordinated effort on the large commercial tower owned by D. Trumpet raining glass and masonry everywhere. Soon after the Praetorian's lived up to their name by storming and taking the tower from the Scourge and claiming the intel and an objective.

The Gladius taking up position on highway one. Far right the D. Trumpet commercial tower

As it became clear the intel in the region was being exhausted units began to dig in with what resulted in a 3 day firefight to the death for the scourge who were never reinforced and hopelessly outnumbered once the global UCM forces were mobilised.

Soon after, President Wut Whent Wong of Taros spoke for the people. "We will hawden ouwa wesolve. We will wight the wongs of this Scouwge atwocity. We will webuild..."

Over the coming months a great deal of money was redirected to reinforcing and developing the early warning, orbital and planetary defences at Taros but what was the reason for this isolated attack? Mankind can only wait and hope.

Infinity - Paradiso Week 1 Prologue Valley of Darkness

This is the first part of the Paradiso campaign I am running and to get all the newcomers (including me) off with a bang we are running through the prologue missions as well. These won't count any XP towards the main campaign, but its a good starting point to bring people up to scratch. I will be recounting my missions and also adding any extra story flavour from the rest of the group where I feel necessary (or bothered). We will be adapting the story so it is not a true reflection of Paradiso but more like our own piece of sci-fi universe (think JJ Abrams Star Trek).

Valley of Darkness starts with the crashed Dawn spaceship on Paradiso, the ship was hit by extremely strong solar activity and fell into the planet. A mixture of urban/jungle terrain, the ALEPH force loses connection with human sphere and acts in isolation exploring the planet. Everything appears quiet but then a steady THUD! THUD! THUD! can be heard across the deserted expanse. Everything goes silent again, not even the wildlife makes a sound. Minutes pass and nothing, the remote heavy ALEPH laying low.

Suddenly the gargantuan form of a TAG rears above the back of a derelict building overgrown with vines unleashing a hailstorm of HMG rounds, cut off between the ship and the enemy forces the ALEPH must push their way back to safety.

Deployment for Valley of Darkness
Information came through that the Yu Jiing had set up a forward base in the area but this was a very aggressive play by them to deny knowledge of it. My team spread out onto each flank gaining deployment first and the first turn. The plan was to split them and make a dash through the middle whilst keeping them occupied.

The abandoned town
Turn one, my left flank with Lieutenant Deva, Dakini Tacbot Medic and Zayin Rebot postured to get some decent positioning to try and deny the TAG and the Teracotta troops an easy battle, then all my resources went into my right flank, the Asura with her Hacking Device Plus impersonating an enemy trooper strolled out and spent several actions moving towards the lonely guardsman on overwatch. As my Asura got within range he identified me, but it was too late as she rushed into melee throwing each other to the floor both grappling for leverage.

The Deva and Devabot take cover to stop the approaching TAG whilst the Zayin sets up to deny a sneaky back door
The turn then went to Yu Jiing, the TAG vaulted over a cargo container and piled round after round into my Lieutenant who was hugging cover, a lucky shot hit a weak point and damaged the TAG but it just kept on coming. Unknown to the TAG was the Dakini Tacbot sniper who landed an armour piercing round across the entire board. It hit home and momentarily dazed the brute. Taking heavy damage early the Yu Jiing lieutenant took control and ran into the firefight landing two shots on my Deva lieutenant taking her straight to null state, panic erupted.

Impersonating the enemy, the Asura waltzes into melee being discovered just as he can see the lights of her eyes
The Yu Jiing Lieutenant's rallying call sent a Teracotta soldier up against the Zayin which unloaded 4 rounds of HMG into him, artfully dodging it all he opened fire with the boarding shotgun, damaging the cervo's on the structure and disabling him. Meanwhile the Lieutenant crept up on the Dakini Tactbot Medic and put a round into his back dropping him.

The ALEPH were in a state of panic turn 2 with only irregular orders to go round this was going to be damage mitigation time. My sniper sought cover and the Sophotect marched down the right flank whilst her Yudbot ran towards the downed Zayin dodging combi rifle fire left and right thanks to its mimetism. The Asura dodged clear of the guard she was tied down with in melee and opened fire as he emptied two pistol clips into her. Her enhanced training meant she avoided the worst of it and landed a shot right above the collarbone wounding him. Taking the initiative she claimed leadership and banded together the remaining ALEPH forces so at least they stood a chance next round.

The Yu Jiing TAG holding its own
Yu Jiing turn 2 reacted with aggression. The wounded guard opened fire again and again on the Asura and managed to land a critical hit, but the success was short lived. After taking the hit she rebounded and put the guard out of his misery with a well aimed shot to the temple. The Yu Jiing TAG had started to make a beeline across the board but was caught in the open the the Tactbot sniper who again landed a critical hit causing the suit to grind and come to a halt damaged beyond use.

The Yu Jiing lieutenant and the remaining Terracota soldiers tried to make their way across the board but were being held down by the suppressing fire from the sniper and the Sophotect who were buying time for the Asura to get back to the ship.

Breaking out of combat the Asura fires round after round at the Teracotta soldier whilst withdrawing to the board edge
Turn 3 for the ALEPH began and the Yudbot made a dash for Zayin, just out of range the bot took a full boarding shotgun payload to the chest and crumpled. The Sophotect momentarily dazed from the connection loss took a stray shot too landing a wound. But it wasn't enough for the Yu Jiing as the Asura ran for the board edge and made it to safety. Turn 3 for the Yu Jiing and they cleaned up the remaining ALEPH who were leaderless.

Wrap Up

A great game with Tim, really enjoyed how this panned out and I have an Asura for my followup mission! To come soon!

Star Wars Imperial Assault - Campaign Episode I

Here starts our full Star Wars Imperial Assault campaign. This will be a mini series of posts which wrap up the story of the heroic rebels as they try to defeat the evil galactic empire. First a break down of our characters and who plays who.

Craig (me) will be playing as the imperial scum and in my infinite wisdom has gone for the "smash you in the face strategy" of Military Might!

The Military Might of the Empire
Andy has taken up the pinpoint marksman Mak Eshkha'rey an elusive elite who can bring death from afar to the empire.

Mak Eshkha'rey, sniper extraordinaire
Paul is playing the gun slinging smuggler Jyn Odan, tricky to pin down she has the moves to get out of any tight spot.

Slippery smuggler Jyn Odan
Sebastien is playing Diala who has uncanny affinity with the force but has never received proper training. She can use her skill with combat weapons to get up close and personal as well as giving her foresight using the force.

Not quite a Jedi but the force is most definitely with her, Diala
Charlotte is playing Ghaarkaan, the unstoppable wookie tank wielding a mighty staff. When this guy charges, it hurts!

Ghaarkaan what is your battle cry? "Ghaaaaaarrrrrkkkaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnn"
With the party set I was handed some much needed advice.

I suggest a new strategy, R2. Let the wookie win

The Story So Far

Sent to a back alley planet to investigate a stray beacon the team locate a facility hidden in the forests. Silencing the patrol quickly they open the blast doors and are assaulted by imperials who appear to have been alerted to the rebels presence. The team duck, dive and dodge their way through the mass of imperial storm troopers who can't hit a barn door. The imperials caught on to the team infiltrating the compound and decide to level it to the ground making sure no trace is left, the countdown timer commences and just moments before the complex is levelled to the ground they snatch and grab the data and make a hasty escape into their shuttle.

Following the data retrieval Mak hears a familiar name during the mission debriefing. A location which he thought had been abandoned just over a year ago turns out to be in full action again. Mak gives high command detailed information about the facility and how it would pose a crippling blow to the empire if they could intervene. Still unsure of the source of this data the high command question Mak and his only answer is "I have a debt to pay." The commander gives the green light on the mission and they make their way to a dusty planet devoid of much but a few scattered industrial settlements. Buried in the rock they find ventilation shafts which Mak points out will get them into the compound undetected.

After crawling through what seems like miles of endless tunnels they emerge in the back of a hangar bay through a grated grill that Mak kicks open. Nobody around they investigate further and see the production line of hundreds of walkers and scout vehicles. It turns out that they have come across a small army of equipment intended to supply the imperial forces in the system. Mak and the team set about installing the demolition charges throughout the complex when the alarm suddenly is raised. With a cheeky grin Mak climbs the nearest AT-ST and says "I guess we'll take this one for a spin." The hangar bay opens and they are met by storm troopers, probe droids and the emperors own royal guard. An elusive figure sneaks around in the shadows but not being able to investigate further Mak walks out turrets blazing. The storm troopers and royal guard hold their ground using shock grenades and their powerful combat weaponry but the AT-ST proves to be a real pain soaking up all the fire-power buying time for the rebels to flank the imperials.

Gharkaan charges into the Storm Trooper ranks ripping them to pieces and Diala assaults the royal guard from behind. Just as the tide was turning, a blur of red hurtles through the melee with twin blades wielded in a propeller like motion. The royal guard champion takes the legs from under the AT-ST with precise strikes to the hydraulics. Mak just about scrambles away from the vehicle as it topples and looks at the champion with hatred in his eyes, with a rallying call the rebels press the imperials back into the rocky outcrop around the compound, both Diala and Gharkaan are wounded in the close quarters fighting with the tough royal guard but they can't hold out forever. Diala with outburst of force energy deflects the royal guard champions attack and finding an opening uses her enhanced speed to deal the final blow to the champion. From then on Mak continued to pick off the remaining imperials at range.

As the sun is setting and they make their way back to the pick up point they look back on the compound which is over a click away and Mak does the honours of blowing it to smithereens in a needlessly large show of explosives creating a mushroom cloud which can be seen from miles around.

Upon returning to the fleet the rebel data analysts inform you that they have located a key target of interest deep in the forests of Aris V. Interesting transmissions have been caught to and from this location but they don't have a clear picture of what is happening. As such this location has been marked as priority number one by high command.

The rebels enter the lush tropical forests of Aris V and cautiously make their way towards the compound, finding it split into three seperate buildings they decide to split up into teams of two to cover more ground. As they seperated the rebels begin to hear things, the soft padding of feet on the forest floor, deep throated growling and the glimpses of cat eyes through the foliage.

As Diala and Mak make their way towards the first doorway they are assailed by a huge forest cat. Leaping between Mak and Diala and swinging wildly at both to see if it could grab an easy meal. Both rebels desperately fend off the beast as it back away realising they weren't going down without a fight.

Meanwhile Gharkaan and Jyn moved towards the second building and came across a patrol of heavy storm troopers. Jyn took a stray shot from the storm troopers which wounded her and things were about to get worse as she was lying there another forest cat emerged from between the trees. Gharkaan charged to tie up the beast and buy Jyn some time which she used to crawl to the nearby console and download the data. As the information lit up before her eyes she could make out the production plans for a large project funded by the empire but it would need more information to make sense of.

On the other side of the compound Mak had just about managed to open the blast doors whilst Diala held back the cat. As more and more Imperials were alerted to their presence it was clear that the rebels had little time left, Mak successfully downloaded the data from the second console before being caught by a probe droid. Finally Gharkaan was brought down by the huge cat which overpowered him. In a daredevil manoeuvre their pilot strafed across the field firing lasers at random causing everyone to take cover, the rebels made a break for it and scrambled aboard the craft just as the General Weiss separated two trees in his mighty AT-ST shaking his fist at them as they made their escape.

Whilst heading through space back to the rendezvous point an urgent transmission came in for Gharkaan, it appears as though the imperials identified him and traced his family back to their home world where they have taken a dear friend of his prisoner. In his rage Gharkaan goes ballistic smashing tables and ammunition boxes demanding to set him free "gghhhaaaaa, ghaaa, aarraaaggghhh, grrrrr, raaahhhh ghaaaa" the team make a decision to do everything they can to help their furry friend and set a course straight for the wookies home planet.

As they descend onto the compound there is no subtlety only the Wookie fury, Diala charged the heavy and elite storm troopers followed by Gharkaan hot on her heels but the power of the storm troopers was especially deadly as they both suffered grievous wounds from the wave of blaster fire. They did manage to take a good number of the elite with them paving a way for Jyn to sneakily enter the compound and release the first door lock. Then the turrets kicked in and started automatically firing on rebel figures. Hugging to the cover and Diala using her force powers to make her elusive to the turrets, Mak was able to release the second door latch.

With only one remaining the rebels needed to find a way to enter the last building and unlock the cell to save Gharkaan's pal but the Imperials we're dug in like an Alabama tick. With a last ditch effort the rebels pushed towards the locked doors of the cell block but couldn't withstand the might of the empire. They were forced back as the screams of Gharkaans friend came flooding through the open bars, having to make a hasty retreat the rebel team had to contain Gharkaan who went into a animal like frenzy. It took all three of the rebels to hold him down and drag him onto the escape shuttle. As soon as they were out of orbit Gharkaan fell silent, tears of guilt touched his eyes but it only helped to fuel his hatred for the empire and what they had done to his family.
